Strongman Nicolás Maduro has ramped up political repression, which a United Nations fact-finding mission has denounced for its intense and systematic nature. The Maduro regime has also worked to ensure loyalty within its ranks and strengthen alliances with its sponsors. Venezuela’s democratic opposition faces an uncertain future as it pushes for international recognition of González as president-elect and seeks to keep alive the hope of a democratic transition.
