On July 13, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats offered remarks on U.S. intelligence community (IC) transformation efforts and the possible impact of Russian cyber influence on the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Director Coats then joined Hudson Institute Distinguished Fellow Walter Russell Mead for an extended discussion on global and regional threats, including cybersecurity, the challenges of Russia and a rising China, prospects for the denuclearization of North Korea, counterterrorism, and other concerns facing American policymakers today and in the years ahead.

A highly regarded voice on national security, Director Coats leads the Intelligence Community and serves as the principal intelligence advisor to the President. Director Coats had a distinguished career in Congress, where he served on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Select Committee on Intelligence. He was named Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in 2001, arriving in country just three days before the 9/11 attacks.

Dialogues on American Foreign Policy and World Affairs is a Hudson discussion series moderated by Walter Russell Mead, one of America’s leading analysts of international affairs and Global View columnist at The Wall Street Journal. The series features leading policymakers and opinion leaders in candid conversation on timely questions of international affairs and national security.
