CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO - JANUARY 08: Texas National Guard soldiers stand guard as migrants continue to wait at the U.S.-Mexico border on January 08, 2023 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. President Joe Biden made his first visit since taking office to the US-Mexico border on Sunday, spending four hours in El Paso in the US state of Texas. Key Takeaways

1. The Biden administration’s decision to end the “remain in Mexico policy” for asylum seekers directly led to increased chaos at the border.

2. The US needs to work with the Mexican government to defeat the Mexican drug cartels and stop the supply of drugs before they reach our border.

3. Today, the Mexican drug cartels now have more control of the US-Mexico border than the US government. Supplying more border patrol agents and constructing a physical wall along the border would help stem the flow of illegal immigration.

Open-border policies have invited a once-in-a-generation humanitarian crisis at the US southern border. The number of monthly encounters between US Border Patrol agents and migrants attempting to cross is at a record high. Transnational drug cartels continue to bring illicit drugs like fentanyl from Mexico to the United States, exacerbating the American opioid epidemic. What can and should policymakers do to end this humanitarian crisis, stop the flow of drugs, and restore the rule of law at our southern border?

Please join Hudson Distinguished Fellow and former US Attorney General Bill Barr and Hudson Media Fellow Jeremy Hunt for a discussion on the way out of this crisis.
