Join Hudson Institute for a conversation on crime and corruption in Venezuela with Interim President Juan Guaidó and Commissioner Carlos Paparoni. The discussion will be moderated by Adjunct Fellow Marshall Billingslea and Research Fellow Nate Sibley.

Once the wealthiest country in Latin America, Venezuela has been crippled by political turmoil and socioeconomic instability under the predatory regimes of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. Violence, hyperinflation and food shortages have created a major humanitarian crisis, forcing more than 5 million Venezuelans to flee to Colombia and other neighboring countries.

The Maduro regime sustained its grip on power by siphoning public funds and plundering businesses, including billions of dollars from the PDVSA state oil company. Having exhausted these revenue streams, it increasingly collaborates with drug trafficking and organized crime groups, and is engaged in an rapacious ecocide as it strip mines gold and other precious metals without regard for the environment or indigenous peoples. It has also cultivated financial links with Hezbollah and Iran while courting support from other authoritarian regimes including China, Russia and Cuba.

The Trump administration worked with President Guaidó and his team to put significant pressure on Maduro’s criminal enterprise through sanctions and law enforcement initiatives. Please join Hudson Institute for a timely discussion on how the U.S. can continue to support democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela.
