Join Hudson Institute for a discussion with Peter Berkowitz, Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department, whose office just released its much anticipated comprehensive assessment of the challenge China now poses to the United States and its allies in the Indo-Pacific region and throughout the world. The conversation will be moderated by Senior Fellow Tod Lindberg.

The assessment titled "Elements of the China Challenge" argues that China has long been remarkably clear about its regional and global ambitions. The more assertive position of China often attributed to the ascension of Xi Jinpeng to the role of General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is better understood as a product of China’s deliberate, decades-long accrual of wealth and power. The two major drivers of China’s behavior today, the report argues, are the CCP’s determination to maintain absolute political control as China’s influence expands and the long history of Chinese nationalist ambition predating Mao’s revolution. For the United States, the main foreign policy challenge of the twenty-first century will be dealing with China’s rise and its quest for increased influence not only regionally but globally.
