After allowing the COVID-19 pandemic to spread through recklessness and malfeasance, the Chinese Communist Party is seeking to accelerate the shift of global leadership and power away from the United States towards China.

While Chinese citizens are gradually getting back to work after a draconian lockdown, strong evidence suggests the virus has not been fully contained. The pandemic also now poses questions about the fragility of the Communist Party and its authoritarian political economy and institutions. General Secretary Xi Jinping, however, continues to promote the superiority of the Chinese system and its response to the virus.

Join Hudson Institute for a discussion on what the ongoing crisis tells us about the strengths and weaknesses of the Communist Party, what this means for U.S.-China relations, and why the U.S. and allies are entering a high-stakes period of potential danger and opportunity.
