Director, Center for Latin American Studies, Hudson Institute

On March 29, Hudson Institute hosted a panel to discuss transnational organized crime in Latin America. The panel will discuss a new book, Transnational Organized Crime in Latin America and the Caribbean: From Evolving Threats and Responses to Integrated Adaptive Solutions, by Dr. Evan Ellis.

Dr. Ellis leverages his regular travel and interactions with both academics and security officials across the region to paint a panorama of the evolving pattern of transnational criminal activity throughout the region, including narcotrafficking, illegal mining, human trafficking, money laundering and other illicit activity. The book details the interaction and evolution of various criminal entities, including powerful cartels, criminal bands, territorially-oriented gangs, groups performing intermediary functions in the international criminal economy, and groups with a focus on political or religious extremist objectives. The conversation was moderated by Hudson Senior Fellow Ambassador Jaime Daremblum.
