In March, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration of the Department of Commerce asked the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to convene global interested parties to develop a proposal to transition the U.S. government’s stewardship of the Internet’s Domain Name System. The Administration’s decision is an important milestone in the evolution of Internet governance.

The Center for the Economics of the Internet welcomed the Honorable Lawrence Strickling, Fadi Chehadé, Robert M. McDowell, and Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda to discuss the ICANN decision and its future consequences for the evolution of internet governance.

Mr. Strickling is the Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information for the Department of Commerce and Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. He has served in these capacities since 2009.

Mr. Chehadé is the President and CEO of ICANN. He was appointed head of the organization in 2012.

Mr. McDowell is a Visiting Fellow at the Hudson Institute. He served as a Commissioner at the FCC from 2006 to 2013.

Ambassador Sepulveda is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs and U.S. Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy.

Harold Furchtgott-Roth, Senior Fellow of the Hudson Institute, moderated the discussion.
